The Defence of Elswick – Part 2

Welcome to one of the longest running games originally started on the 7th of March before “lockdown” and finally ended a couple of weeks ago when four of us gathered for a suitably “socially distance” session to finish the game off.

As a reminder two reinforced platoons of Anglican League troops have been ordered to engage a royalist force encamped at Elswick, but to add spice to the game the two platoons had slightly different objectives.

Anglican League Objectives

Captain F G Miller:

Intelligence has been received that Royalist Forces are encamped in Elswick following the recent Socialist attack on a supply column from Fleetwood to Preston.

It is understood that the a number of damaged armoured vehicles are present undergoing repairs.

Information is that a small Royalist force, reinforced with BUF and Local Volunteers are in the area.

You are to proceed with the 1st Platoon Bishop of Lancaster Guards reinforced with a platoon of local volunteers and attack the encampment.

Your primary mission is the destruction or capture of the armour, while inflicting damage on the Royalist and BUF forces.

The Honourable James Digby-Blair

The Bishop of Lancaster has requested support from your “pops” in the attack of Royalist forces currently encamped at Elswick.

This is the opportunity for redemption after the failed attack at Knott End and also another chance for a “pop” at those chaps of the BUF who are rumoured to be in the area.

“Pops” has given you the cream of the support available to the Volunteers so there is no excuse for not getting a result.

While you are technically under the command of that chap Miller your main aim is revenge and getting stuck into the BUF and if possible taking out their commander.

Royalist Objectives

In a similar fashion the 3 elements of the Royalist defenders had differing objectives, these were:

Captain Jimmy O’Neill (Regular Forces)

Well stuck out on a limb again, despite getting the majority of the supplies through (and an invite to the dance) the CO took umbrage at the damages to the tanks being transported to Preston.

So your reward you have been stuck out here guarding the damaged vehicles while the lads from the Royal Ordinance Corps are repairing them.

Now there is news that the “bloody” Anglican League are trying to finish off what the damn Commies started.

You need to defend the vehicles and try to drive off any attack. You are supported by the Local Defence Volunteers (and a strange lot they seem) and a platoon of BUF stationed on the other side of the town.

You don’t know what the locals have been up to but you have seen a couple of their lads sneaking about in the hedgerows.

Your objectives are to protect the armour and try not to lose many of the lads but you would happily fight to the last of the BUF.

George Wild – BUF

The army “cocks-up” and instead of being in a nice warm barracks in Preston you are stuck out in the sticks watching their backs and the “locals” don’t even like you in the pub!!!

Now it seems that the Anglican League are sticking their nose in and trying to get hold of the armour.

You have been instructed by “high command” to assist in the defence and also do as much damage to the League as you can, especially the Local militias that are being a pain the arse.

Major Barrington (Local Chief Constable and Local Defence Forces)

First the commies have a go at an Army convoy and now the rumours are that the Anglican League are going to try and attack the damage vehicles.

You have raised the alarm with the Local Defence Force and the lads are on standby.

The “rule of law” is a priority and the protection of the village and its citizens.

You have always been a bit “worried” about the lads in the local Fire Brigade and your suspicions have come true as “Hugh and Pugh” have just confessed that they have been “having a play” with both the engine and a couple of “surprises” they fitted in the roads. It proves they are bloody” pyromaniacs”.

You get on well with the Army chap so you will let him know where they have placed them but out of principle you will not tell that “oick” from the BUF.

Where we left the game was that the Regular Anglican League forces were pushing an attack on Elswick, but surprisingly not the armour! While the local Anglican League forces were going toe to toe with the BUF.

Depleted Anglican League assault on the BUF

The Local Anglican League forces continued to push their attack on the BUF moving up with all their heavy weapons and concentrating fire.

BUF suffering heavy casualties

This meant that the BUF were taking substantial casualties but the leader was safe as he was hiding behind the manor house! However the local AL had also been taking heavy casualties, one squad reduced to 3 men and the other to 2 men!!

Regulars taking a pounding

However this did mean that the regular forces of the Bishop of Lancasters Guards were facing the Local Defence Volunteers and the Regular Army units and taking very heavy casualties. With the veteran unit reduced to just 2 men before they cracked .

Royalist Advance

Their situation wasn’t helped when the Royalist Regulars arrived on the flank and started to engage with machine gun and main gun in two different directions.

Bishops Guards are off

This finished off another section of the Bishops Guard who broke running past their mortar and sniper team.

Finally destroyed

Now the luck finally ran out for the armoured car, having survived 3 hits from the Major’s “elephant gun” (counting as an anti-tank rifle), being shot at three times by a improvised flamethrower (which all missed before running out of fuel) and two shots from the Vickers tank. The Royalist “tank hunters” charged out of cover and manage to hot with 9 out of 10 “bombs” and soon there were bits of armored car all over the road.

Last stand of the BUF

However on the other flank a rain a shot and shell were falling on the BUF and with all sections “doing a runner” the Local Anglican League forces were blooded but victorious.

Royalists survey the scene

On the right flank the Royalists were examining the battlefield and looking after their one , yes that’s right one casualty.

Village secure

While the village was secure but will have to recruit a few more men into the fire brigade and local post office.

“Old Burt” and the Verger discuss the unpleasantness

So how did they do?

Captain Jimmy O’Neill – Royalist Regulars (Paul and Alan)

The biggest winner of the day managing to get two tanks fixed and one into action helped destroy the Bishop of Lancaster’s Guards and only lost one casualty – mentioned in despatches and no doubt wondering what his next reward will be?

George Wild – BUF (Dave B)

Probably the biggest loser of the day, but maybe not looking at the Bishop of Lancasters Guards – given a right kicking by the Local Anglican League, lost most of his troops and heavy weapons, will have a lot of explaining to do when he gets back to base!!!

Major Barrington – Chief Constable and Local Defence Force (“Broken Dice David”)

Honourable mention – successfully defended the town although took some loses and the boys from the Fire Brigade won’t be happy having taken a kicking, but overall not a bad days work.

Captain F G Miller – Anglican League – Bishop of Lancaster Guard (Nigel and Dave A)

Competing with George Miller as the biggest loser of the day – definitely going to be in charge of the latrine cleaning services on his return to base, three sections lost an an armoured car oh dear, oh dear.

The Honourable James Digby-Blair (“Uncle Albert” Julian)

Will have made “pops” proud but lack of support to regulars may have upset the Bishop. Gave the BUF a right kicking the only failure not getting Wild himself. Although the “lads” did take high casualties in two section but none broke and all the supports survived.

So where will the Royalist focus turn next – where are those “commies”

The Defence of Elswick – Part 2

The Defence of Elswick 1938 – Part 1

Decided it was time to breakout my Very British Civil War stuff for last weeks game, terrain was supplied by Paul.

The story so far

As with the rest of the country the area around the Fylde has fallen into chaos and confusion with the refusal of King Edward VIII to abdicate and the split of power throughout the country.

The Royalist forces were last seen trying to get a convoy from Fleetwood to Preston when it was attacked by the local Socialist forces. While the convoy managed to get through several of the armoured vehicles were damaged. At the moment they have been moved to the local village of Elswick where they are undergoing repair. They are defended by a small detachment of the regular army that have stayed loyal to the King as well as a detachment of the BUF.

The village also has a Local Defence Force (LDF) composed of the local constabulary, post office and volunteer fire brigade.

News of the armour has reached the ears of the local Anglican League Command and they have despatched a unit of the Bishop of Lancaster Guard and a local Anglican League platoon supported by various support to take the village.

Runners and Riders

Royalist Army units are commanded by local “legend” (well in his own mind) Captain Jimmy O’Neil (played by Alan and Paul) were encamped just outside the village with 2 sections of camp guard and a section from the Royal Ordinance Corps (who are repairing the damaged vehicles) along with a Vickers Mk II Medium Tank and 2 Vickers Mk VI light tanks under repair. They are supported by the mighty firepower of a 20mm Oerlikon gun.

The BUF (played by Dave B) from Preston are encamped on the other side of the village in Elswick Hall with a full platoon of troops supported by a Sdkfz Adler armoured car and a veteran 18pdr howitzer of WWI vintage.

The Local Defence Force commanded by Chief Inspector “Major” Barrington-Smythe (played by “Broken Dice” David). The platoon is composed of a section each of police, post office and fire brigade volunteers. Support composed of a “disguised Tachanka” a Vickers MMG in the back of a van and much to his surprise a “jury rigged” flamethrower mounted on the back of the local fire engine!!! To confirm his suspicions that the local fire brigade are pyromaniacs they also had 2 “flame traps” deployed on the roads.

The regular Anglican League forces (played by Dave A and Nigel) wil a full platoon of infantry supported by a Renault R35, Schneider P16 armoured car, 80mm mortar and “Azrael’s Handmaidens” a female sniper team that all his forces found worrying!

Last but not least were the Local Anglican League forces played by (“Uncle Albert” Julian ably assisted by his grandson) commanded by The Honourable James Digby Blair his forces composed of 2 sections of infantry, a section of gentleman volunteers mainly armed with shotguns as it is more sporting. They are supported by the “cream” of local support weapons a Boys anti-tank gun, Vickers MMG, FT17 light tank, a Belgium 47mm FRC carrier, 37mm Bofors Portee, mobile pillbox with Lewis gun and last but not least the “armoured pig” transport.

Each of the commands have their own orders and objectives (which will be provided in part 2)

The action commences

So as the sun breaks through the clouds the sleepy village of Elswick wakes for the new day.

Elswick wakes for a new day
Local vicar gives interview to press about recent events
Deliveries still continue to be made
And the curate stops for a natter with “Old Joe”

But forces are on high alert as rumour of enemy in the area reaches the camps.

BUF on alert at Elswick Hall

While repair work continues at the vehicle park.

All quiet at the vehicle park

But peace is shattered as Anglican League forces appear and advance on the village.

Anglican League forces supported by “mobile pillbox” and Bofors portee

BUF move to their support but this soon came under fire itself and receives a hit.

BUF support springs into action

Locals also react with the Fire Brigade volunteers rushing to engage the enemy, unfortunately those shiny brass helmets attracted a lot of attention and they were soon to quit the field.

Barrington-Smythe observes as the Fire Brigade rush into action

On the 2nd turn things look worse for the BUF as a FT17 appears on their flank.

“They have a bally tank”

This soon had the BUF sections scurrying about as they moved to engage the enemy.

BUF rush to deploy

Soon to be regarded as the “luckiest armoured car” escapes it’s first challenge as the roadside “fire trap” fails to detonate and there is only a slight “fizzle” from the bushes.

Armoured car advances

And the Gentlemen volunteers are accused of being “unsporting” using the cows for cover and soon “daisy” is no more (1 or 2 on D6 means that cow is hit rather than enemy).

Advancing using the cows for cover

And soon “sean” joins daisy (only 1 in 6 chance) but he stuck his head up at the wrong time.

“Sean” buys the farm

While the Anglican League continues to advance but they are taking damage. But the sniper team are causing problems. It was also at this time “Broken Dice” was living up to his name, so far he had, failed to detonate the flame trap and now he’s missed the armoured car 3 times, twice with the flamethrower in the fire engine and once with the Barrington-Smythe’s elephant gun and he only need a “3”with each shot

Anglican League continue to advance.

On the flank the Anglican League forces debus from the “pig” and take up firing positions.

Infantry debus from the “pig”

On the Anglican League left flank their forces close in on the BUF but they are still holding their positions.

Pressure on the BUF

Now “Broken Dice” excels himself! Barrington-Smythe hits with the elephant gun but does no damage and then he misses with the flamethrower again! And this time he follows it up with a 1 which means he has run out of fuel. Very ungentlemanly language emanates from Barrington-Smythe.

Barrington-Smythe curses his luck

Now in all this action where are the regulars I hear you ask, well they have to roll a D6 each turn to repair some damage on the armour to get it moving. So to give the Anglican League a sporting chance decided to take a lesson from “Broken Dice” and rolled 1,1,2 and finally on turn 4 a number high enough to move out with the Vickers MkII.

Royalist Regulars finally decide to join the fray

While the Anglican League are still advancing they are taking casualties but pressing the attack.

Damaged but not defeated

ANd despite all the chaos only one unit has quit the field so far

R35 closes on the enemy

It was at this stage we had to call it time for the day, but we will be back in a month to finish the game and see if any of the players reach their objectives!!!

The Defence of Elswick 1938 – Part 1

Odds and Sods from the painting desk

While completing the Congo Figures I also managed to finish off a couple of other bits and pieces I have been working on.

The first is the “communication centre” for the VBCW with both electronic (telephone) and mobile (bicycle) distribution mechanisms.

The figures are from the Wargames Foundry Home Guard collection – which I use for the modern equipped regulars in my VBCW forces.

The next is the first of the armed Chevvy’s for the LRDG force I have been (very) slowly building up.

Now all I have to do is get the other 2 armed Chevvy’s and the remaining transports done and then I can start on the DAK I have had in boxes for the last couple of years.

Skirmish in the Desert

Over the last week have been catching up on basing some figures that have been completed for a while.

The firts lot are to be used for skirmish games usimg the Bolt Action rules. These are a British raiding force (LRDG/SAS) and Africa Corps for the Western Desert in World War 2.

Initial LRDG/SAS Command Group completed (Perry Miniatures):

LRDG

While the second section will eventually be their adversaries:

Afrika Korps

Now just to complete the rest and the dozen or so vehicles.

Skirmish in the Desert

LRDG Chevrolet “Scorpion Tail”

Started to work thius week on the Western Desert skirmish forces I am building, for use with the Bolt Action rules.

First off the blocks is the support vehicle for the LRDG Patrol carrying the Breda 35mm on the back.

The model is from Offenzive Miniatures and as seen in the photo is white metal.

While no instructions included in the kit I bought, examination of the photos on the web site and books led to straight forward construction, albeit with the odd finger sticking incident.

ChassisFinal construction of the core chasis, with the Breda just showing in the background.

Model still in 4 main parts at the moment to aid painting, chasis, front, back and Breda but the photo below shows the rough final construction, now on the the other 4 wagons and then the painting!!
